Gay as an Insult

When people use the word “gay” as an insult is the biggest problem I have when it comes to any time of discrimination against one another. You hear people say this everywhere they go; it’s said in schools, grocery stores, parks, and even churches. I noticed this about my sixth grade year; people all around me would call each other gay as an insult. Hearing this makes me want to duct tape people’s mouths closed. Using someone’s sexuality as an insult is completely discriminating.
Gay means liking someone of the same gender. Many closed minded people use gay as an insult, if someone is a homophobe, they would more likely use gay as a derogatory thing. When gay is used as comeback to someone in not only insults them but abuses the actually meaning of gay and the people who are homosexuals. People take homosexuality as a bad thing because that’s how society has portrayed the word. Being gay or saying gay shouldn’t be a thing that people associate with negative things.
Most people use religion as an excuse to say gay to hurt someone. Notice that the bible says that humans shouldn’t judge each other. In the bible being homosexual is a sin. It is also said that the only unforgivable sin is bashing or not believing in “God.” People say that you will go to hell for being homosexual; yet again being a homosexual isn’t an unforgivable sin. The bible also says that once you repent or ask for forgiveness then the “Holy Spirit” will forget all about the sin you have committed. Also society using the excuse of “they live a life of their sexuality every day,” this is true, yet some Pentecostals believe wearing jewelry, wearing makeup, having tattoos, women wearing any type of clothing that doesn’t cover their body, and having a certain length of hair is a sin. Yet, some people who are married wear rings every day, some have tattoos, many woman wear makeup, if you have kids who do theater, dance, or cheerleading then more than likely they wear makeup for plays, dances, competitions, or even just dress rehearsals. If everything in the bible is supposed to be followed like some religions believe then most people would end up going to “hell.” Then the subject about clothing women wear, they have to stay modest and have their body covered up. That must mean they don’t go to the beach, pool, waterparks, anything that would require a bathing suit. Or maybe they just go in all their clothes or don’t go at all. Yes, that makes so much sense. Not, going in the pool with all you clothes is ignorant, just like calling someone gay as an insult is ignorant. It’s a waste of oxygen.
A friend of mine has a bad habit of calling something she finds to be stupid gay. One day we were on the bus and our bus driving asked the kids on the bus a question. Well, my friend found this question to be ignorant, so she screams out “that’s so gay!” We have a person on our bus that is homosexual and you could tell he didn’t like her statement. Quite frankly, I wanted to shove my foot in her mouth to stop her from saying another statement.
Calling someone gay in an upsetting manner is like calling someone Grape Powerade just because I don’t like or drink Grape Powerade. If you said something racist people would throw temper tantrums like five year olds. The same thing applies with race, religion, weight, height, sexuality, anything that people could judge another on, on a daily basis. You wouldn’t look at someone and say oh that’s so “African-American.” That would be discrimination of race, the same applies as saying oh that’s so “gay:” it’s a discrimination of sexuality. It shouldn’t be allowed. All of these things have name-calling that goes along with them, all of which are negative. Sexuality shouldn’t be such a derogatory thing to say.
Overall, saying “gay” as a bad thing isn’t right. Sexuality shouldn’t a negative thing. It’s used in schools, stores, churches, in cars, it’s said everywhere. This will always be my biggest and most horrendous pet peeve of mine. Hopefully this problem will fade away.
