Lauren P

Moving Day

Over the summer of 6th grade, I met my best friend Sara. We started off playing on the same soccer and softball team. We instantly became friends and began spending everyday together. Also, we had a lot of the same interests in athletics, music, and just enjoyed being together. She could always make me laugh, and she still does today. After a while we told each other our secrets and became very close. Everything seemed to be perfect until the summer of 7th grade when I found out she was moving to North Carolina.
One day we were walking to the pool when her mom called her, she answered and said that Sara needed to come home. When we got to Sara’s house she broke the news to me,
“Lauren I need to talk to you.” She said.
“Okay, what’s up?” I said.
“My dad has been offered a new job down in North Carolina and he’s going to accept it.”  I was at a loss for words, my best friend was moving right before 7th grade year. I thought we were going to be together all throughout high school. We were even going to try out for the middle school softball team, which at the time seemed like a big deal. Eventually, I learned to live with the fact that she was moving and tried to make the best of that summer while she was still in Virginia.
That summer was one of the best summers I have ever had. We spent days at the lake, and hours at the pool. We also played a lot of travel softball tournaments together. She was the pitcher and I was the shortstop for the Scrappers. It was one of my favorite travel teams that I have played on. Sadly, summer came to an end and the school year began. She left for North Carolina and started a brand new school.
Luckily we found some ways to still remain close. We text every day, but it’s still not the same as being with her. I came down to North Carolina over the spring break of 8th grade. I was so excited to see where she lived and meet some of her new friends. When I first got there she showed me her house and introduced me to some of the kids in her neighborhood. Over the week we went to a lot of amazing places that are only in North Carolina. She took me to an amusement park called Frankie’s, where we raced go karts. We also played a lot more softball and some basketball too. After that week I had to go home, I was sad but I knew I would see her soon enough.
Overall I still wish she was here in Roanoke, but in a way I feel as if her moving brought us closer and made our friendship even stronger. I still see her every couple of months when her and her family come in for holidays, and we are planning for me to come back down to North Carolina over the summer.
