The day that changed my life

Today is the day I will remember forever.  My family and I bought all of our supplies and we were ready to take in a puppy.  As we drove to the breeder’s house, which seemed like it took a decade to arrive; my sister and I were coming up with names.  I was so excited, I couldn’t even think about names. My sister was eager to adopt a puppy so that she couldn’t think either.  After a while of guessing and throwing around different names we came up with the perfect name right as the car came to a stop. Mickey!  Or Minnie if the puppy we bought was a girl. I took a deep breath; I couldn’t believe that in a few moments we would have a little puppy added to our family.  It all felt like a dream, I thought about it in my head, how we would pick him out of a crowd of puppies and he would join our family forever.
When we all walked into the house we saw some puppies playing in a fenced in area. Of course, my mom was standing in the corner, trying not to look afraid of the bigger dogs; she wasn’t a big fan of animals. Whereas my sister and I were looking at the adorable girl puppies and my dad was obviously discussing the price of the puppies with the breeder.  After he walked away from the breeder, my dad came and sat with us. He said, “You guys will have to choose a boy dog, they are MUCH cheaper”.  I was fine with that. As long as we were taking a dog home with us at the end of the day, I was happy.  I really didn’t care what gender the puppy will be.  We sat there for a while just playing and looking, not having a clue on what puppy to adopt.  I noticed that there was only one puppy not wrestling to get our attention, so I came and sat near the puppy.  I looked at the breeder and asked calmly, “What type of puppy is this?”  She told me the puppy was a boy and I squealed with joy. The minute I did the sound, he put his tail between his legs and walked away, whimpering. “Aw, come here cute little puppy, yes you are, oh, aren’t you a cute puppy!” I said trying to reach and pet him.  He looked at me with his adorable puppy eyes and I knew we had to buy him.
As we left the breeder’s place and went to the car, Mickey had instantly stuck onto my mom.  He would not come to anyone else. This was awful to my mom because she had to hold him during the whole car ride home while he drooled all over her.  Even though I was a little disappointed that I couldn’t hold him first, everything could not be more perfect. We took Mickey home and loved him forever. However, I seemed to forget the responsibilities of adopting an animal.
Every day we had to feed, walk, and play with him.  On top of that he was just a little puppy with no training at all.  Imagine how much work this took!  We had to transform a disobedient and messy puppy into a trained, house-broken dog.  This struggle took our whole family working and playing with him 24/7 to get him trained.  Mickey would rip up important things and make a mess everywhere! He even ate one of my mom student’s homework. Yes, the puppy ate the homework. My mom was laughing.  He was causing chaos in our house.  The most struggling experience was for my dad because he had to sleep at night in our basement with Mickey to keep him company and keep the rest of the house clean.  Mickey was a crazy but amazing gift; he put a smile on the whole family with his funny ways and with the hilarious things he did and continued to do to get a treat.  Even though he was crazy energetic, there was happiness and joy in the house that was brought by him.
Although training him was tough it was worth it in the end, having an extra family member to love and take care of made everything better.  My life has never had a dull moment since we bought my dog. He has protected us, showed us unconditional love, and has entertained us for seven years.  Mickey showed us that we can all be a family and spend time together. He has brought us closer than we had ever been. Thank you Mickey!
