Taylor G

From Phoenix to Roanoke

I was about six years old and attending Zuni Hills Elementary school. I will never forget that name because when you are six years old having a school with name is about the coolest thing ever. I had lived in Phoenix my whole life and hadn`t ever thought about moving somewhere else. I loved living there. It was always sunny and warm and I could play outside for hours upon hours and never get tired of it. Until one day my parents called me and my two older brothers into the same room. My dad said, “Kids, I have been offered a better job in Roanoke, Virginia and we are going to move there. How do you guys feel about that?” Of course both of my brothers were excited about going and I didn’t want to damper the mood, so I just said
“That sounds like so much fun!” I said that, but I didn’t even know what or where Virginia was.
On moving day my bed was taken apart, my favorite Barbie kitchen set was taken out of my room and was put into multiple boxes. All day long there were a bunch of strange men in my house that were big, sweaty, and all had ripped shirts. It looked like they needed some new clothes but I didn’t bother to offer them any because I doubt they could fit into any of my clothes or even my brothers. They kept taking all of our stuff out of the house; I didn’t know where or why they were taking. It no one had really explained that to me so I just sat down quietly and watched all of them work. Finally everything was gone and I mean every single thing my room didn’t even look like my room anymore.
My brothers and I were crammed into the back of our car with a ton of bags and boxes behind us. It didn’t really register how long it was going to take to get to Virginia. I thought it might take as long as it would going to grandmas but boy was I wrong. At one point of the trip by oldest brother, David, asked; “Are we still going to go to a school named Zuni Hills?” My other brother Sean replied to that with,
“Of course not stupid, what do you think they are going to do bring the whole school with us?”
It was finally our last day driving it had been five days, five night of sleeping in hotels with uncomfortable beds, and five days of eating gross food that I didn’t like. Finally it was our last day of driving. I had started seeing mountains for the first time; we never had those in Phoenix. I had really gotten tired of my brothers by the last day. They were always either fighting with each other or picking on me. Today my oldest brother, David, said to me, “Taylor I bet when we get there you aren’t going to make any new friends and no one is going to like you.” My dad replied back to David with,
“David you be nice to your sister.” Then he said to me, “Taylor don’t worry. You are going to make a bunch of new friends in Roanoke.”
When we pulled up into our new house there were already a bunch of huge trucks there they were the same ones that were at our house on moving day. I was really confused as to why they were there, until my mom finally told me. “They are here because that’s where all of our stuff is that was in our old house back in Phoenix.”
“Oh, so that’s why they put all of our stuff into boxes.” I said to my mom because now I understood. I thought that we were going to have to buy all new stuff. Then I saw my bed and my Barbie kitchen come out of the truck I was so excited to see them. When I saw both of my brothers walking my Barbie kitchen up the stairs together, taking it to my new room that’s when I realized that I was kind of excited to be living in a new home and a new place.
