The Like Title is Like Umm Yeah

My pet peeve is when people use umm and like when they talk.  When people talk like that not only is it annoying, but it makes them sound very uneducated and as if their vocabulary in quite meager.
The most common time people talk like this is when they have to give speeches and talk in front of large groups of people.  The other time you hear people talking like this are when teenagers are talking.  Teenagers seem to have a tendency to talk like this a lot for some reason whether it be lack of things to talk about or decreasing vocabularies.  Weather it is out of nervousness or lack of something else to say you must really try and avoid saying like and umm too much or even at all.
The use of these meaningless phrases seems to have not been around for too long, and hopefully will go away quickly.  The lacking vocabulary of our generation seems to be the main cause of the problem but it could also be caused by our constant use of nonverbal communication which is leading to inability to communicate as well verbally to one another.
If someone were to use like and umm while talking to you it would go a lot like this
“Hey, Alan what’s up?”
“Just been doing like homework, you know.  How about you man” asked Alan?
“Just been playing a little basketball” You reply.
“Cool, umm so how’s school?”
Whereas if they don’t use excess words when they talk it’s a lot more auditorily pleasing, because it flows much better and is more direct.
“Hey, Alan what’s up”
“Just been doing my homework, how about you?” replied Alan
“Just been playing some basketball” You reply.
“Cool, so how’s school been going?”

The only thing we can do know is to be conscious of what we are saying to make sure we avoid excessive words that are meaningless.  Other than that we can, as individuals, expand our vocabulary so just by habit we do not use such simple words therefor eliminating the problem.
