Water Skiing

It was a beautiful warm and breezy spring day. I am thirteen years old and finishing the seventh grade. My aunts, uncles, cousins, and family members all got together and rented out a lake house during spring break. This was the second year we had rented out this lake house and we have enjoyed it both times. We have already been here for three days and I have spent them fishing and swimming with my cousins, Zachary and Charlie.
Warm layered oranges, reds, and pinks filled the early morning sky. I was sitting in a lounge chair at the edge of dock fishing with my two cousins. There was silence in the air until I heard a slight purr. It was the sound of a distant motor and I could tell it was coming closer. We have a pontoon boat from our other lake house that we always take out, but this sounded much different. A white speed boat was flying down the lake and it was headed straight at us. It was getting closer and closer but we couldn’t make out the people driving it.
“Who do you think that is?” I announced to my cousins.
“Probably just someone who lives here,” my older cousin Zachary said.
“I wonder what it would be like to have a speed boat?” my younger cousin Charlie said.
“I heard my parents talking about renting a boat,” I told my cousins. “I think they decided not to though.”
“Wait a second!” Zachary said. “That’s your dad and little sister!”
My dad and little sister pulled up to our dock grinning from ear to ear. My cousins and I reeled in our fishing lines. We didn’t care that we didn’t catch anything because my dad has rented a speed boat. Although, that wasn’t the only thing my dad and little sister got. My dad then pulled out dark blue water skis with a thin light green strip going up the middle. None of us have ever water skied before, not even our parents. My cousins, sister, father, and I all looked at each other and we wanted to try water skiing immediately. I ran back up to the house and whipped my blue swimsuit on as quickly as I could. When I came back down to the docks my dad gave all of us kids a brief idea on how to use the waterskies. He went over how to start, how to stand up, the signals, and how to not swim to the boat.
I hopped on the boat with everyone else and we drove out into the lake. My cousin Zach was the first one to go and try out the water skies because he was the oldest. I watched him swim out with the skies and grab the handle. The handle was attached to a rope which connected the handle and boat. When he put his thumbs up, which was the go signal, the boats engine roared and we took off. It was a big disappointing since the power of the boat ripped the handle out of his hands. We let him try a couple more times but he couldn’t get the hang of it. Soon my older sister, Claudia, went and had a try at water skiing. She came close but just couldn’t stay on top of the water. Finally, it was my turn to try water skiing.
I took the skis from Claudia and swam out behind the boat with the rope in my hand. I was determined that I was going to be the one who would get it. I got in the ready position and told them I was ready. My dad revved the engine and took off. Water gushed over my head while the handle ripped away from me, leaving me behind. This monstrosity happened two more times before they were going to give my turn to a sibling. I begged for one more turn and they gave it to me knowing it would be quick.
I grabbed the handle as tight as I could and gave them thumbs up. The white speed boat took off in front of me while I waited for the huge tug on the rope. I shot out of the water at an amazing speed. I was standing there gliding across the water, I couldn’t believe it. I looked up and my family was staring with their jaws open in disbelief. I could feel the wind blowing at my face and the water felt like ice as it sprayed my legs. I was overwhelmed in joy and amazed that I had done it. I was the first one to water ski.
When my turn ended I climbed aboard the speed boat with a huge smile. Everyone congratulated me on my success water skiing. My cousins kept asking me how I did it and for pointers so they could be the next one. Although, I knew that this was something bigger than just water skiing. I wasn’t the biggest, toughest, smartest, or quickest in my family. But I was the most determined. After that experience, I knew that as long as I am determined I can accomplish anyt
