No Goal Is Too
High!
Have you ever had
a goal that was so high, that you could not possibly reach or fulfill it?
Sometimes it is good to have high goals because you have something to look
forward to every day. Life without aim is considered to be life without any
direction. Like my mom always said “Everyone has their own dreams. So why not
set a goal for yourself and work hard to accomplish it.” My goal was to learn
English fast as a bullet. It was really important to me that I could achieve
this because my family is counting on me and I also really wanted to learn more
than one language. “Determine what you want and why you want it. Once you understand
what's important, you can utilize your passions and achieve anything.”-Brooke Griffin
To begin with, I’m Vietnamese. I moved to
Untied State about five years ago. My mom and I decided to move because we both
believed that there was a higher chance of receiving a better education in the United
States. I moved when I was in 4th grade and it was really tough to do
my work because I didn’t understand any English. As the year went on the only
work I could do was math because it didn’t require knowing a language, just
numbers. Since I didn’t know any English it was hard for me to make friends
because one, I couldn’t understand them and two, they wouldn’t be able to
understand me. I was lucky enough to I have had my cousins Phi, Finn, and Faye
to help me out with English since they were born in America. Phi, Finn and Faye
were great, but they couldn’t help me as much since they didn’t really know
much of Vietnamese. As time went by things got more complicated because I was
entering 7th grade and still didn’t have a good understanding of
English.
Secondly, now that
I was in 7th grade I began to learn more English since I was
surrounded by it 24/7. When I entered middle school I started to get better grades
in my classes. It was all thanks to my teacher Mrs. Gray. She was an excellent
English teacher and she helped me learn a lot. It was hard to learn the
language because I always spoke to my mom in Vietnamese at home and spoke
English at school and other places.
Furthermore, as 8th grade began, I started
to reflect back to when I was in 4th grade and I asked myself “Wow!
How did I get here?” It was all thanks to the help from my teacher and my
family. My uncle used to make me read children books every night before I went
to bed. He also made me write a copy of one of the pages from the book that I
had read that day. Anyways, I was still frustrated at myself because I still had
a really hard time writing in English and comprehending it. In 8th
grade, I had to take my writing test. It was quite tough and I didn’t pass my
test by three points, which was disappointing but then I had the opportunity to
retake it and I passed with a good score. Now I look back on how far I have
come, how much I have learned and I achieved by coming to the U.S. and it has
been a memorable one.
As a matter of
fact, now that I am in my first year of high school my English had gotten a lot
better than I used to be. I am really proud of myself for never giving up on my
dream and accomplishing my goal. I use to be a little girl who said she could
never be able to learn English, but now I’m writing a two page essay about my
goal and how I reached it in my 2nd language. After my 8th grade writing test,
the school said I should be getting out of ESL because my English was good and
I could write pretty well. Although I still don’t believe my English is as good
as a person that was born in America, I’m just really happy that I had reached
my goal and proud of what I have become.
In conclusion, what
I’m trying to say is that it isn’t easy to reach to your goal but as long as
you have a good mindset anything can happen and fall into place. Things did
change for me a lot from 2009-2014 but over the course of those years I have
grown into a better person. Since I have reached my goal of learning English, I
started a new goal of becoming a great artist. I know it’ll be a challenge but
I am still super determined. This is just a story on how I stuck with my goal and
how it paid off by sticking with it. I believe that having dreams and goals in
life are worth accomplishing, as long as you never give up, you will one day
get there. So go, set your dream high and work hard to get there. “Those who
get the farthest are passionate, Driven and positive. They not only aim high
for themselves, but they also support and lift up others”- Brooke Griffin.
